Mysterious Moai - Ceramic Tiki Mug

This weathered Moai, an icon of Polynesian pop, is our tribute as a mug to the rise of Tiki during the mid 20th century.

The Moai has seen it all: the post-war Polynesian pop and Tiki boom, the craze for all things "exotic," the growth and decline of Tiki empires. The Moai's stern visage is a symbol of a mysterious far-off island which had become a very familiar face in the world of Tiki. During the mid-century, often Moai were found on matchbooks, featured on restaurant menus and signs, made endlessly as ceramic mugs, and even replicated as monolithic statues to grace the interiors and exteriors of Tiki Temples. The Moai's stony silence is a testament to the enduring power of the ancient image and a reminder that even in the midst of mid-century kitsch a touch of the authentic always shines through.

 

About this Tiki Mug:

    • Mug photos show the mug in outdoor lighting. No filters has been used on these photos. We feel these photos most closely represent the colors in-person.
    • This mug holds about 18oz (varies slightly mug to mug), and is about 6.6 inches tall.

    • Designed and sculpted by Tikiland Trading Co. in sunny Southern California. Imported.
    • Note about import production: These mugs are being produced with one of our tried and tested production partners. All mugs will have passed through multiple rounds of quality control before being shipped out.
    • These are ceramic mugs intended for cold or room temperature beverages only.
    • All of our ceramics are handmade. Each mug varies slightly and is unique, and is not the exact mug photographed here, although we try for it to be as identical as possible when produced by hand. During ceramic production sometimes there can be small variations with glaze, color, texture, cleanup, etc.
    • We guarantee mugs not to arrive with structural cracks or chips, and will replace them at our expense if they arrive to you in this condition.
    • Only one mug included.
    • While technically this can be put in a dishwasher, we only recommend hand washing as this is a functional piece of art.

    What are “Whoopsies”?

    This only applies to those who select 'Whoopsies' as an option when ordering.

    During production, sometimes 'Whoopsies!' happen. These mugs we still consider sellable and usable, but we’ve previously held them back from shipping for often very small and obscure reasons that most people wouldn’t notice/care about. While all of our mugs are hand made and unique, some are a little more unique than others. We’ve had many people inquire about mugs that we’ve not had in-stock for awhile, so we thought this could be a good way to get some mugs that we no longer produce into the hands of those who really want them, and to make room on our shelves for new mugs that we’ve got in the works.

    Each of these tiki mugs will have one or more of these, or other, small issues: glaze somewhere unintended, glaze smudges, superficial cracks that don’t affect the integrity of the mug, variation in color or glaze texture, cleanup issues, etc. As each mugs issues vary and are unique, they aren’t reflected in pictures here. Mugs are being sold in as-is condition. While we reserve the right to permanently mark mugs on bottom, out of sight, to indicate they're part of this group, this set will not be marked. Exchanges for alternate 'Whoopsie!' mugs will be allowed if buyer pays shipping costs. Mugs will not arrive cracked (excludes superficial ‘cracks’).

    When art meets island life

    I love this tiki mug and the connection to Easter Island for me. His stance and seriousness remind me that every day is tiki day and every face tells a story. This is art and island life all in one. Great hug and one that adds real value to my collection.
